Jess Conroy has been awarded a National Science Foundation CAREER award for her proposal Ocean-atmosphere interactions through the lens of stable water isotopologues. This research will use new measurements of stable isotope ratios of O and H in seawater, precipitation, and water vapour, to advance understanding of the hydrologic cycle in the tropical Pacific, and how it is archived in key oceanic and atmospheric variables over periods of years to centuries. This exciting new
research integrates ocean and atmospheric perspectives on the hydrologic cycle, and will include modern observations, model simulations and paleoclimate data. Jess’s project aims to address uncertainties in future variations of large-scale spatial patterns of precipitation and evaporation, especially over the oceans.
Jess’s CAREER award brings the total to four in the department – with current CAREER awards to Lijun Liu, Trish Gregg and Willy Guenther, demonstrating the fantastic research vitality the department is lucky to have!
